This Privacy Policy explains how Northstar Apps LLC, an Illinois limited liability company (“Northstar Apps,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), collects, uses, and shares information in connection with the Parla mobile application, the website at speakparla.com, and related services (together, the “Service”).
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. The Service is intended only for users who are 18 years of age or older.
Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information in order to provide the Service:
- Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address.
- Conversation audio. When you take part in a conversation, the Service captures audio from your device microphone so that it can power your spoken practice and generate responses.
- Learning preferences. During onboarding and as you use the Service, we collect the language you want to learn and your learning preferences, such as your goals, level, and interests.
- Subscription information. When you purchase a subscription, we receive limited transaction information from the Apple App Store or Google Play (such as the fact and status of your subscription). We do not collect or store your full payment card details.
- Usage and device information. We may collect basic technical information, such as app version and general usage activity, to operate and improve the Service.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- provide, operate, and maintain the Service, including powering your conversations;
- personalize your experience based on your language and learning preferences;
- process and manage your subscription;
- communicate with you about your account, including service-related notices and support;
- monitor, secure, and improve the Service; and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
Audio Processing by OpenAI
To power the conversational experience, the audio captured during your conversations is transmitted to OpenAI, our third-party artificial-intelligence provider, for processing. OpenAI processes this audio to interpret what you say and to generate responses. This transmission is a necessary part of delivering the Service.
OpenAI’s handling of data it processes on our behalf is governed by its agreements with us and by its own policies. You can learn more about how OpenAI handles data in OpenAI’s privacy policy.
Aside from the providers that operate the Service on our behalf, we do not share your conversation audio with third parties for their own purposes.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers. We share information with vendors that perform services on our behalf, such as OpenAI for audio processing, cloud hosting, and analytics. These providers may process information only to provide services to us.
- App stores. Subscription purchases are processed by the Apple App Store and Google Play under their own privacy policies.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Northstar Apps, our users, or others.
- Business transfers. If Northstar Apps is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.
Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as necessary to provide the Service, to comply with our legal obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce our agreements. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or de-identify it. You may request deletion of your account and associated personal information as described below.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to access, correct, or delete it, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, or to request deletion of your account, contact us at support@speakparla.com. We will respond consistent with applicable law. You may also manage notification and microphone permissions through your device settings.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect the information we collect. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children’s Privacy
The Service is not directed to, and is not intended for use by, anyone under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will take steps to delete it promptly.
International Users
We are based in the United States, and the information we collect is processed in the United States and in other countries where our service providers operate. These countries may have data-protection laws that differ from those in your country. By using the Service, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and elsewhere.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after the changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
